Hey lounge, how does one document a spider's web?
Post Body

I have to diagram a spider's random web spindlings throughout multiple buildings. I have no idea where to start, there are chords everywhere, the whole thing is mismatched and I am the one that has to put it down somewhere what goes where.

This includes voice/data/security systems. I am pretty much at a loss at the proper way to do it. I have a few ideas, and just wanted to know if they were sufficient. I have no specialized software to accomplish this, and I just need to put it down somewhere so that if someone new comes in, they won't go 'oh god, what' and become totally clueless for weeks, if not months, on end.

I was thinking about having a folder on a secure system, in that folder I would steal a map of the multibuilding facility. Then on the map I would label the locations of each spoke of the network with names such as 'x building closet'. Then I would have folders for each location.

Inside THOSE folders would be a diagram of each room, with further lables of each point of interest. Such things as routers/switches/punch blocks are given unique names. So that everything has a semblance of uniqueness. I would be sure to find someway to make it known which is which on or around the physical device. Post it notes, I dunno.

So, each of those unique devices would have an excell file attributed to it. That excell file would detail where each connection goes and if it would connect to a device detailed on another excell file I could use the '/main folder/sub folder/unique device' identifier so that it could be easily referenced.

Is that any good? The wires are scary, and they go everywhere. I pretty much have to do this myself and no one has ever thought of to do this before. grumble grumble grumble
