The recent wigs post got me thinking about hair in general.
I'm nearly bald IRL and wear a wig, but many others here are blessed with luxurious locks. So, since I'm here to serve the trans community at large and not just cater to my own needs...
Here is a link to Strands For Trans, a website that addresses the problem that "Haircuts are historically gendered: Salons for women. Barbershops for men. This leaves the trans community feeling uncomfortable, unwelcome, and unsure."
They do so by providing space for businesses--barbers, salons, stylists, etc.--that go out of their way to be welcoming to the transgender community.
I think this is a terrific idea! I wish more business sectors would do the same. Restaurants and clothing stores are two that come to mind. Letting trans people know they can frequent your establishment without fear of harassment or scrutiny, is a brilliant marketing tool. WE spend money, too!
The site's operators have gone as far as providing "The Gender Euphoria & Beyond: A Guide for Creating Affirming & Safe Spaces" that any participating can request and get sent to them for FREE.
So, check it out. I see there a number of Detroit-area hair salons and barbers listed already. If you have one you frequent and they're not on the site map, let them know about it and get their name out there, too.
