Following a particularly damaging vote on scrapping the Human Rights Act, in which the Government was defeated by the Labour Party and a substantial number of backbench rebels lead by David Davis, David Cameron met with colleagues and civil servants at Downing Street to discuss his future as Prime Minister.
Mr. Cameron was reportedly told by senior members of the Government that he has lost the support of many of his MPs, and that it would not be advisable to continue in his position; such a revelation lead to his resignation to Queen Elizabeth this morning, which has now been accepted. It is understood from sources inside the Conservative and Unionist Party, that George Osborne will not face competition in the leadership election that is to follow, which may surprise political commentators - Theresa May becoming increasingly the candidate of concern having now been associated with this disaster of a Bill. The Cabinet should be particularly enlightening, seeing as appeasement will form a large body of the work the new Party Leader will be undertaking in his first weeks as Prime Minister.
