Good Morning ladies and gentlemen! It is good to be back in Bridlington to speak with the hardest working people in Britain, the men and women of our fisheries!
Today is an exciting day for the British fishing industry. Today we are looking forward to the day, which is soon approaching, that will bring an end to the common fisheries that have been such a burden on fishing here in Humberside. I have come before you many times to pledge my support for Brexit and for allowing this country to take control of its fisheries again. It is this record of action that has brought us to today.
Now, however, I think we need to talk of the real business that we have worked so hard to accomplish, and that is what our fisheries will look like when the Brexit business is concluded. Uncertainty has been the byword of the Brexit opponents, but I am here to tell you that the LPUK has a plan that will ensure that British fisheries are productive and sustainable for generations to come.
So, what is that plan? The first part of that plan is to ensure that illegal fishing is taken more seriously. Under the Common Fisheries, disputes were common and our waters were taken advantage of by foreign fishermen who do not have our best interests at heart. Therefore, the LPUK will push for stricter penalties for illegal fishing in British waters and will use diplomacy to send a strong message to our neighbors about the priority our fisheries have. Secondly, the LPUK will push for the introduction of a more flexible "Keep What You Catch" policy that will ease some restrictions and allow fishermen to better take advantage of the bounty the sea provides while reducing waste. Our goal is to take the burden off of your shoulders and get bureaucratic red tape as far from your boats as we can. We know that there isn't a soul more concerned about the strength and sustainability of the fisheries as the person drawing a living from it.
What I will stress is that we are now soon going to have full control over our fishing policy, and I stand ready to advocate for you in Parliament as we decide the future of fishing in Britain.
