Chevalier starts the day early delivering signs to locals like Rodger the farmer who asked him about exporting to new markets now we left the EU.
Well Rodger for me it’s always been an aspiration that leaving the EU could lead to greater free trade and open markets for British business to serve. So that we create jobs back home.
But parliament at the start of the Brexit process, perhaps a bit too idealistically passed a slate of tariffs that were very low. Now I want low tariffs, but I don’t just want them for foreign businesses selling goods here, I want British farms and businesses to be able to thrive too.
If we aren’t able to get free trade deals farmers like you will be faced with exceptionally high tariffs such as 25% on peas and beans into the US.
My fear is that if we lower our tariffs unilaterally we won’t be able to get a good deal as we won’t have anything to exchange for other nations lowering theirs.
That’s why as a Lord I worked across parties to build a consensus for the Cross Border Taxation (Strong Negotiating Position) Act that passed last term. Now we have a strong negotiating position, if I’m returned to parliament I will hold whoever is in government to use that position we built for them to go out and get a post brexit Britain the trade deals we need to make it a success for our country and farmers like you.
By 10 am Chevalier is at the Ross on Wyes historic Market House for a ‘meet the candidate event’,
The first person to meet Chev is Betty who lives on the edge of Rye and has in recent years had problems with travelers trespassing every few months and wonders why the police have done nothing.
I am sorry to hear about your issues Betty, through my political career I have advocated for the protection of private property. Everyone should have the right to enjoy theirs without harassment or trespass. I would like to see something done about travelling communities that would be so sensitive and so understanding about land needs and human needs that we don’t have to have this conversation.
Your situation makes it really clear we need to stop our law being abused by jokers, we have legislated for councils to provide legal safe and accessible sites for travelers and yet the illegality persists. I will support provision of legal sites both privately and publicly run and require the police to explore wider ranges of potential legal sites including in neighboring counties when called to deal with civil trespass.
And I promise you that if I’m elected I will say enough is enough, instead of the police being unable by law to take action if a repeat offence happens more than 3 months apart I will fight to allow courts to be able to prevent repeated instances of trespassing by order to give citizens like you protection to enjoy your property as you are entitled to.
So I will ensure that we give sufficient support to travelling communities to live legally while also giving police sufficient powers to support council officers to clear unauthorised sites. Which gives the vast majority of that group who are good law abiding family people a bad name.
I hope that if we tackle the bad apples with serious laws and by taking compassionate action to provide legal sites I believe we can have a better society for everyone without conflicts over trespass fueling discrimination.
Later Chev meets George, a retired civil engineer who has started an antiques restoration business in his retirement but is struggling to expand to the internet due to poor service in Rye.
That sounds like an excellent business idea, I can promise you if elected I will be fighting for better broadband with a universal service obligation on providers to ensure that no communities are left behind and unable to access economic opportunities.
Brian a middle aged Libertarian party supporter who is worried about government waste and Solidarity getting into power.
Well Brian I am proud to have rejoined the LPUK and I'm keen to bring a libertarian outlook to Severn.
I am campaigning now as an independent so that I can truly be an independent voice for Severn communities and people.
I share your concerns, I was raised to believe in public service and in a tradition that sees government money not as the ‘governments’ but taxpayers money, who deserve a good deal for what they pay for. Unlike the Conservatives who jump from one large spending promise to the next, first childcare, then
In the next parliament I have a number of priorities from legal aid reforms that support cost saving mediation to prescription charges that cuts down on wasteful prescriptions for cheap over the counter medication eating up Dr’s time which costs taxpayers.
Late in the event Michelle, a younger resident of the town stopped and was concerned that a lack of economic opportunities would hurt the village and cause her to have to move away.
Communities like Rye make of Britain's soul and it's vitally important that we are able to create a society where communities like Rye here, are sustainable.
On the big picture level we need to positively move forwards after Brexit and seize the opportunities, be bold in pursuing low tariffs in trade deals.
I’m confident with local investment in transport instead of big boondogle projects like HS2 we can have a competitive Severn, with a sensible points based immigration system that provides for Severn's diverse needs - engineering jobs in Rugby and fruit pickers in Hertfordshire we can create jobs and keep communities going.
Margaret the Ross-on-Rye Recorders political and horticultural reporter also spoke to Chev and wrote up the event for the recorder.
