On the last day of campaigning, DriftersBuddy gave a speech to the crowd that had gathered to discuss Scotland and Sport.
Today is the last day of campaigning which means it is going to be a busy day. For all politically minded people canvassing it means a lot of steps being added on your counter on your phone. For me I suspect Iāll plough through the 10,000 target. Keeping fit and healthy whilst also taking part in an election, a thing I love to do, is vital. And itās important children especially can keep fit and healthy whilst doing something they love to do. It is why in Government we helped to introduce the Young Personsā Sports Initiative.
This initiative, worked on with our friends in the Liberal Democrats, allow for 140,000 young people every year to have places at sports clubs in their area subsidised, with a priority going to children who are eligible for the pupil premium. This means that the most deprived students are benefitting from it most. We know what the studies say. If children are active, they are more likely to stay active beyond their childhood and tackling obesity is something we have to do if we want to see a healthy Scotland. By āgetting them youngā so to speak, we are getting them into the habit of exercise that will stay with them. But of course there is more to do.
Next term, we intend to write the Daily Mile into the curriculum for primary schools. What is this? Well it quite simple really every morning primary school pupils can run, walk or jog a mile often around their playground. It gets them activated and motivated for the day, gives them energy for the lessons ahead and of course once again instils into them a sense of just how important it is to keep fit.
Finally I want to talk about the World Cup. This is something which I am so glad the Scottish Conservatives have vowed to fight for. Imagine the scenes in 2030 when Scotland wins the FIFA World Cup with games played right here in Scotland. Now, I accept, that may be a little bit of a pipe dream, but dare to dream right? The benefits to our tourism industry, to small businesses and our hospitality sector will be immense as the world flocks to the United Kingdom and Republic of Ireland to witness one of the greatest shows on earth. We will throw ourselves into the campaign to secure its bid doing whatever we need to.
So when you vote tomorrow, vote for a party that has the record and plan to get Scotland active and get Scotland healthy. That is the Scottish Conservatives and I urge you to back us tomorrow.
