Post Body

Addressing a crowd of Libertarian Party volunteers, workers from nearby oil services companies and a handful of local journalists, LeChevalier opens his campaign standing atop an improvised platform made from an upturned skip

Today I ask for your support to save our communities and save our jobs!

This election we need to send a signal loud and clear that the uncaring way that the oil industry has been treated in recent years is not good enough.

Not just the oil workers but the jobs in service sectors and the communities they support with their pay packets. This is a city of granite built up because we had an oil industry!

The other parties will not clearly commit to lifting the death sentence over Aberdeen’s oil industry and the high skill jobs that come with it.

Indeed my opponent “Job Killer” JGM wrote the bill that passed it!

So this election I urge you send a strong message that Aberdonians won’t be taken for granted by the major parties, that if they want to impose unscientific cuts off well they can pay for the retraining of workers and support our council to account for the lack of investment that is killing our high street and causing unemployment to rise!

Job Killer JGM needs to pick up the tab he made with a commitment to the people of Aberdeen unfortunately nothing like that is in the manifesto! Just more failed policies for last century.

In Aberdeen we need a dynamic strategy to ensure that we maximise the benefits from oil, carefully end operations, decommission responsibly to protect the environment and secure jobs by supporting transitions to new industries.

JGM showed in this election that he cares more about ending our industry to be able to virtue signal about carbon emissions.

It’s easy to have no emissions if you have no economy!

I want to create conditions to support a stable transition, one that protects communities like this in Bridge of Don.

I, unlike the other candidates here, have a clear plan for protecting your jobs.

I want to see a gradual change in the carbon tax at a national level to incentivise businesses to adapt and invest in new green products and ways of working.

And we need to encourage and support Scottish businesses with targeted research funding and grants to become world leaders in decommissioning. Whatever the government's strategy we cannot ward off the inevitable - eventually North Sea oil will run out but the choice at this election is between the Libertarian Party who have a plan and the Labour Party to decide to set a date to end the industry without consulting Aberdeen nor providing a plan.

The North Sea by virtue of being one of the earliest fields will run out first too, we can use this to build up Scottish businesses with a wealth of experience decommissioning to high standards. And we can once our oil does run out we can take this global.

I fear if we carry on with no plan JGM we will see a collapse in oil companies, we need to maximise potential returns from North Sea oil to keep the companies solvent so they can afford to decommission.

If we don’t the cost will be felt by the environment and by taxpayers like us who have to pick up the tab.

The third part of my plan is to ensure that we in Scotland ensure that retraining is supported, in education where we make adult education accessible and affordable, and we go further with reforms to our schools! So that parental choice can drive innovation.

The worst case scenario is the no plan JGM scenario where we stop the industry prematurely and local council spending on education needs to cut robbing industry of the skilled employees that they will need for new jobs!

I am the man with a plan, if you elect me I'll keep the Tories honest and I'll stand up to Labour ideologues like Job Killer JGM for communities all over Grampian dependent on oil, dependent on fishing and other industries for their livelihoods!
