"This town, is coming like a ghost town,
All the clubs have been closed down,
This place, is coming like a ghost town,
Bands won't play no more,
Too much fighting on the dance floor,
Do you remember the good old days before the ghost town?,
We danced and sang, and the music played in a de boomtown..."
Coventry is a microcosm of many midland cities. The 11th century city was one of the centres of the industrial revolution; and for this it suffered hugely during the Second World War losing thosuands of houses, factories and its famous cathedral. However, a boom soon followed, when Coventry was pivotal to the UK's car-building empire. Many flocked to the area to spend their time and their money in a city that had, beyond all hope, surged after utter destruction a decade or two earlier.
But the industries disappeared in the 70s and 80s. Crime soared. Coventry became the ghost town. The final humiliation? Coventry City FC were relegated from the Premier League in 2001, and have never returned.
Brexit will make nothing easier for the residents of Coventry. Trade will be harder to come by, which for a city of 350 thousand is a problem. Many areas are still depressed and in need of investment.
The Liberal Democrats have promised to set up a regional investment bank to help areas like Coventry, and get the city back to its former glory. We also want to reconnect the city, with regular, modern and cheap rail routes into Birmingham and beyond. With these two simple measures, we'll turn Coventry from a ghost town to a boom town.
