GEXIII [Norfolk and Suffolk] Troe goes to Norwich Castle and bikes around
Once again Troe jumped on a train, which for some might seem to be a theme for his visits outside his own constituency. For a final train ride he went to Norwich where he brought his bike on the train and biked from the station to Norwich Castle where he met up with Pootis.
“I can understand that my dear colleague Pootis has already visited another grade I listed building here in Norwich before my visit, and originally my visit wasn’t going to include a visit here, but his visit inspired me, and I am a big nerd for a good castle. Norwich, like a lot of English cities, definitely including Canterbury in my constituency, is home to many interesting buildings. Some of these, like Norwich Castle also hold a museum, and unfortunately the last government decided to defund such museums threatening the cultural and historic heritage of England and the rest of the UK.”
The candidates then took a tour around the museum to see the castle and the artifacts that the museum holds. They talked a bit with the museum director about the museum, its finances now that funding from the government had disappeared and the general future for the castle and places like it in Norwich.
“I still find it sad that places like these might become financially unstable and disappear to a higher degree, even putting the upkeep of historical buildings like this grade I listed building in danger.”
He and Pootis then biked together around Norwich, stopping to talk with voters in several different places as they shared small postcards with a message from Labour about making the UK more bike-friendly and to 'leave the car at home and take the bike — it's better for you and the environment'.
“This is originally what the visit was about. The environment is threatened, both here at home and all around the globe. We need to do something about that and one small thing that can be done, is reducing the amount of car travel by providing viable alternatives. That means we have to fund public transport even more than today, but also make the UK, especially the bigger cities, bike-friendly so that people feel they can easily bike around if they don't have to go all too far.”
The visit continued for a few hours with the two candidates taking some pictures and also doing a bit of canvassing on their bikes. At the end Pootis followed Troe back to the station where he once again, and for the final time this election season, took the train back to Canterbury, Kent.
