Maroiogog livestreams himself taking a walk up the river Wey to discuss Labour’s environmental policy.

Hello, is this working chat? it is? Ok great! Welcome everyone, you may wonder what I am doing in such a weird setting? This is the river Wey, which flows through the constituency of Surrey, where I am standing for election as a member of Parliament.

I came here, far away from everything else which is going on in this election campaign because I want to have a chat with you about our environmental policy, and there is no way I can do that in a city.

Central to our plans regarding the tackling of the environmental crises we are facing is the belief that the actions which we take in that sense can be an opportunity to give prosperity back to out country. Many others like to fearmonger about the effects that tackling climate change swiftly would have on our economy, and these provisions are a key reaction to that.

First of all, we need to change how we produce our power. Currently a very large proportion of the energy we produce comes from gas and coal. This needs to swiftly change. We plan the department for Energy and Climate Change to receive additional funding to ensure that we can see this change swiftly and move on to greener power sources. This would both be existing technologies such a nuclear, solar and wind but we would also increase spending on research and development for new kinds of production techniques such a fusion that may become viable in the future decreasing costs and increasing efficiencies.

This is key if we want to reduce pollution in other areas. Take our proposals for transport, we want to ban the sale of combustion engine vehicles by 2025. This measure would be useless if it wasn’t coupled with a strong commitment to making our energy generation systems greener as well.

To remain on the theme of transportation, that also needs to be completely revolutionized. The use of public transportation or of alternative model of transport such a cycling must be encouraged and must become the new norm. We are strongly committed to redesign our cities so that they may go from being designed for cars to be designed for humans. But we don’t want the citizen to have to bare the cost of this transition, hence why we will expand the current public transportation services to reach rural communities, to improve frequency and to reduce the time people have to spend on it.

But environmentalism doesn’t stop at the fight against climate change. Throughout this term Labour has staunchly defended every single piece of environmental legislation that has been brought to the commons, such as the recent bill to reduce the use of single use plastics. Our manifesto contains yet more policies that represent key steps in the right direction for these areas, such as a provisions to ensure that the interests of natural conservation and agriculture are balanced.

So how will this improve our economy? Well we will be focusing a lot of investment in what currently are some of the most deprived areas of our country. This will create new jobs and make sure our terrible regional inequalities become less evident. Furthermore this will be our chance to massively roll out the plans we have in mind to give workers greater control on the economy. Through a mix of nationalization, cooperativization and unionization we will make sure that all of these new projects are run for communities and not for profits.

The big plans we have in mind will of course include a lot of spending on research and development. We want to ensure that we can, in the future, export many of the technologies that we would need to develop to achieve these plans, and become world leaders in the related sectors. This would bring sustained long term growth and make sure our balance of payments will never be negativer ever again.

That is all I had to say about policies, how about we do a Q&A?

The Q&A went on for a while, and then the stream ended.
