#SPVI [Glasgow] Going Up some Stairs
Author Summary
Post Body

Back to Glasgow was the Sunday afternoon call for Mg as the Holyrood campaign continued - this time to help out his good friend Sanic. He decided to remain averse to the bustling city centre with the aftermath of the remembrance Sunday events and instead head to the outskirts. Drumchapel, in the city’s north-west was chosen as the venue for the rendezvous with some of the local green campaigners.

This invariably begins with selfies but there is government to be won and much more serious business to attend. They decided to allocate each pair to a toward block and see who can vanvass quickest. Mg was distinctly not impressed with this suggestion and took his own time heading up the stairs. This actually highlights one of the benefits for the digital campaign nowadays - with many homes seriously inaccessible for campaigners. It’s hard to believe that these kinds of places are regularly reached without the presence of the party elite.

With campaigns therefore reaching more people than ever before arguably there is no need for these sorts of home visits. This is not the case because people do still value getting a physical connection with their politicians especially in cases where this usually not forthcoming. These forgotten communities are therefore some of the best places in the country to campaign for the reaction that you recieve.

Tailoring to your doorstep audience is another key feature of the campaign so Mg launched straight into social security policy mode. Drilling down hard on the fact that our opponents are backing the clibs, a party which refuses to implement any form of social security benefits. A party who prefer people to starve. Negative campaigning must always be fought with negative campaigning, such a sad fact of political life.

On a much more positive note, Mg could entice electors with pledges for children, the disabled and so on. Levelling up opportunity for everyone rather than pulling up the ladder behind you (a bit like when climbing a tower block). This is the kind of public discourse that people want to see rom their politicians and the kind of narrative that the Greens are convinced will win this election for themselves and the left more broadly.

There’s no terrace or anything on the top of these towers so sadly there was a lack of good opportunities for a team photo at the end of the session. Nevertheless we can be assured that the Drumchapel Greens team are more than energised for the campaign that still lies ahead of us.
