Ladies and gentlemen, friends and comrades, it is my pleasure to unveil a symbol that represents the core values of the Labour party-- a commitment to the glory of the past without sacrificing success in the future, technological development, egalitarianism, and simplicity. The mighty Spitfire served to defend the home islands from threat on land and sea, its grace and power spread all across the world through programmes of exchange and export. It is a simple machine that gets the job done-- a model towards which we ought to strive in our government. There isn’t much more I can say except to present this Spitfire LF Mk. IX, which rolled off the assembly line in 1941, painted in special Labour colours “ATTLEE’S GHOST.” We have received express permission from the Civil Aviation Authority to take off right here from Hampstead Heath.
