At the Museum of Water and Steam in Brentford Orange38 has been discussing education with teachers, students, and local residents. He has been seeking to explain the Liberal Democrat policy on education, and why it matters to West London.
Good afternoon everybody, thank you for being here. You might be wondering why we've met in this museum to discuss education, but it is because I believe this museum represents exactly why education matters. Steam power, and its refinement, fueled the Industrial Revolution, and steam power remains the backbone of our energy production even today. This great leap forward in technology, which has given us modern technology and society, could not have been achieved without education. Similarly, future leaps forward will be unachievable if we do not educate our children properly.
Education has always been absolutely central to liberalism, so it is little surprise that my party's manifesto deals extensively with the topic. We have promised to reorganise and improve school management, return all schools to LEA oversight, and set up parent councils in schools. These changes will give the local community a much bigger role in the running of schools, making education a more localised affair whilst also maintaining an eye on the big picture. This is why I would say education is very much a local matter, as well as a national issue.
Additionally, we will abolish and replace Ofsted, do away with regional school commissioners, increase the oversight of home-schooled pupils, increase the pupil premium by 25% and link it to inflation. Moreover, exams will be revised to reduce stress, coursework will be reintroduced into exam-only subjects, classroom technology will be advanced, and the curriculum will be amended to include more real-life skills.
A good local representative is essential to making sure the needs and wants of the local community are taken into account when education is reformed. This is not a strictly national issue best left entirely to list MPs, this an issue that requires strong cooperation between local constituency MPs and regional list MPs. This is why I ask you to endorse my candidacy, so we can encourage strong cooperation between the national, regional and local. So that education can be made better and stronger for the future.
Thank you for meeting me, and I'd be happy to answer any questions anyone might have.
