Post Body

wearing his trademark green rollerskates, imnofox went doorknocking around Doncaster

"Hi, i'm imnofox, your local proven MP for South Yorkshire. How are you doing this evening?"

"Oh, hi. I'm well. I've heard some troubling claims from the NUP candidate, saying that you want to pave over our green spaces- that seems like a wild thing for a Green to support?"

"The National Unionist Party has a unique relationship with the truth, and those dirty attacks are yet another example of that. We need to be protecting our green spaces, our woodlands- because they're ever-shrinking as cities and towns needlessly grow outwards. We need to prioritise construction on our many brown-field sites, not irreversibly place buildings and roads where our special birds and animals try to live. The claims made by the NUP candidate should be taken with a grain of salt. The reality is that only the Greens have a proven track record of standing up for the environment and against the economic paradigm that incentivises environmental destruction."

"Yeah, I didn't think that claim made much sense. Thanks for correcting the record for me! You've certainly got my vote."

"No worries, ma'am, have a lovely evening"

imnofox skated to the next house, almost falling off as he skidded round the front gate

"Good evening, i'm imnofox, your local MP for South Yorkshire. I'm out here every day of the week hoping to earn my re-election to represent the place I call home. How are you?"

"Oh, well, I'm doing fine, can't complain too much. There is one thing I'd like to pick your brains about- every tory government we've had only looks at things through the lens of GDP. Well, that tells me nothing about the quality of the local river, or the cleanliness of the air. That has a much bigger impact on my wellbeing than a tenth of a percent change in GDP!"

"You raise a very salient point, Sir, and I must agree wholeheartedly. We can't use this one statistic to measure all of the UK's progress, because it simply doesn't. The fixation of politicians, mostly on the right, on this number, above all other evidence, is a huge reason why our environment is continually polluted, why we keep seeing more people on the street, why the NHS is constantly at breaking point. When the idea of GDP was developed for the US congress in the 30s, Kuznets- the bloke working on it- warned the congress against its use as a measure of welfare, yet for so long neoliberal governments have used it for just that. A "booming" economy on paper means little if you still don't have a job, or if you have a mental health crisis. I'm committed, and so are the rest of the Greens for that matter, on transforming the way we measure and judge progress in the United Kingdom. Our stats need to consider people's wellbeing, whether that be their physical health, their mental health, their income and it's inequality, whether they're on the street or in a safe home, etc, and we need to consider the environmental impact of our economy- things like the pollution of our land, of our rivers, of our forest, like our emissions profile and whether we're meeting our global obligations on that front. These are things policymakers and legislators need to have at the forefront of their mind when they develop laws, when they tinker with the economic levers. This is especially important as we navigate the journey away from the European Union, especially when we're no longer bound by so many of those regulations that kept tory governments in check."

"It's very reassuring to hear that there is some real support for this in parliament. No other candidates are singing from the songsheet as me, so I'm very pleased to hear all the positive thoughts you have on those kinds of reforms. You've got my vote!"

imnofox took off his skates, for they were causing blisters as he stood in people's doorways, and moved to the next home

"Hi there, sorry to disturb you- i'm imnofox, your local Green MP for South Yorkshire. How are you this evening?"

"Oh sorry dear, i'm just about to go out. I usually vote for the lib-dems anyway."

"That's not to worry. Here, have one of my brochures. Unfortunately, the lib-dems have sidled up to the radical libertarians, and are endorsing a nutty Classical Liberal candidate here in South Yorkshire. I'd like to think that i'm the only sensible broad-tent candidate standing."

"Oh my, that is a worry. I wouldn't dream of voting for the Classical Liberals, and I certainly can't vote for the NUP. Stability is important, you see, so i'll have a read of this here brochure, and I may just vote for you after all. Good luck, dear!"

imnofox continued on his way- by foot- until he fell over asleep in someone's yard from exhaustion
