The First Minister and Scottish Green Principal Speaker, /u/mg9500 began his Sunday campaign by going on a tour of Glasgow’s Science Centre on the banks of the Clyde. This has been a hallmark of Glasgow’s and Scotland’s tourist School since the beginning of the century and represents a key sector of Scottish society.
Drawing on this, the First Minister gave a ride statement before he headed into the Science Mall.
Scotland has always been at the forefront of scientific discoveries and advancements, we are all rightfully proud of this and as a Government we have endeavored to protect and enhance this status for the future. Places like this are a key part of this, captivating not only visitors to our country but our next generation of scientists, inventors and engineers. Working hand in hand with our schools places like this can and will transform our country, they must have the next government’s full and unconditional support.
To advance in science our universities, both ancient and modern, but continue to be at the forefront of cutting edge research. We have more highly regarded universities per capita than any other country on Earth. Throughout history Scotland has supported education and this must continue. That’s why I am deeply worried that parties in this election are running with a platform of closing down our universities. This is denying knowledge to our young people, preventing process in our nation and turning our backs on centuries of Scottish history. This cannot be allowed to happen, I will not allow this to happen, no sensible government could.
The second half of the First Minister’s tour involved him heading up the Glasgow Tower. Whilst this world record holder has been long ridiculed it has been open now for over three years, somewhat of a testament to Scotland’s engineers. From the viewing platform, the First Minister gave the following remarks.
What we can see from up here is truly extraordinary, and I’m not talking about the wonderful scenery of the campsies. This Land was derelict not too long ago, a symbol of this great city’s completely lamentable and totally avoidable decline at the end of the last century. It has been transformed forever however by continued government support. This science centre, television studios for both BBC Scotland and STV, our two national broadcasters, a conference centre and a large area. If this was envisaged thirty years ago, people would have considered you mad, but it is now complete reality.
These are the achievements of governments which supported the city of Glasgow in its various regeneration projects. This city can only ever be eternally grateful for this trust and belief, people might make Glasgow and give it our historic soul but governments have rebuilt it. This can be replicated on brownfield sites across the nation.
From the programme that is already underway on Dundee’s waterfront, to the transformation of transport in the capital Scotland is reinventing itself. This must continue not just in our cities but in our small towns and all across this land that I love. From Kilmarnock to Peterhead communities need to be invest in, have trust place in them, for this is how we will all grow as a nation. With the Scottish Greens this is guaranteed, we always place our communities first whenever they are under threat. We did this down in East Kilbride, we did this for our fishing communities and now we pledge this for all the deprived suburbs of Glasgow and beyond. A nation, not a city, renewed.
On descent, the First Minister joined some local party activists in their mid morning leafleting. This took in large portions of the city all the way into the city centre. Always environmentally conscious he then boarded a train at Central Station for a journey back to East Kilbride for his day’s local campaigning.
