The First Minister’s campaign day started early with a visit to the Isle of Arran as the last weekend before polling day. The island is one of few to be included in the predominantly urban Clydeside constituency. After mid-morning leafleting in Lamlash, /u/mg9500 returned to the island’s capital, Brodick, where he spoke to the assembled party activists.
Good Morning Arran. Firstly I'd like to stress that this island is important to all of us over on the mainland. Yes this may be Clydeside, and not Highland and Grampian, but you still deserve a local MP who cares about island affairs not one encapsulated by the bright lights of Glasgow. The Scottish Greens can guarantee this, a constituency office here in Brodick, recognition of this wonderful isle in Parliament.
What I want to do, however, is to zoom you all the way out from these local affairs, even for just a moment. Connecting our international image to our local communities is what brings us such wealth as a nation. We can fight discrimination on the basis of nationality, sexuality, colour or creed just as effectively abroad as we do here in Scotland.
Just as we uphold land reform and the right to roam here on Arran we can uphold the rights of those who live on land abroad. From South America, to India, and the far flung islands of Polynesia we must stand up for indigenous rights just as we do our own.
After the admittedly brief speech, the First Minister confirmed his attendance at tomorrow's Green rally at George Square in Glasgow and caught the ferry back to the mainland.
On arrival in Ardrossan, he was informed of a metaphorical Conservative incursion into enemy territory. Latching on to the wrong parliamentary candidate accompanying the Scottish Tory leader on his visit to the new town, an evening speech outside his constituency office in the town centre, was hastily arranged.
What a pleasure it is to be back here in East Kilbride, back here in Lanarkshire and the Borders. It's a shame that another party which purports to be a serious political entity is quite able to grasp that.
This is not Clydeside, however nice a constituency that is, and I can't wait for the rally tomorrow afternoon, and should not be treated as such. As I said earlier today on Arran, every town, every village and every city up and down Scotland deserves an MP who will listen to and nurture local interests. If the tories win across the country’s south on Thursday then it quite simply our great town will be forgotten. Will a Tory MP who sits in Ayr, Dumfries or Haddington even realise that we form part of their constituency? Clearly not!
I have stood up for this community in Holyrood, as have my green constituency colleagues in Glasgow and Lothian and care deeply that we have honest and genuine representation at all levels here. Neither Clydeside nor Lanarkshire and the Borders can trust the Tories to represent them, they don't even know where the border is. Think about this town, this community when casting your ballot on Thursday, let's keep our powerful voice, not throw it away to the tories.
The extensive crowds which had gathered around the impromptu podium cheered and embraced the First Minister as he mingled for selfies among them. This included the town's Green councillors who naturally appeared for the event.
