Surprisingly, the people of Britain and by extension Chesterfield were used to seeing penguins on the campaign trail, so the arrival of NGSpy at a small community centre in the outskirts did not raise any immediate eyebrows, although, the fact that the penguin was now running for Solidarity itself caused some small shockwaves to ripple through social media.
It was this ripple that resulted in a planned low-key event being turned into something of a spectacle, as political nerds and interested locals flocked to the community centre to listen to the former Chancellor speaker.
“I am pleasantly surprised by the number in attendance today, and I am thankful to each and every one of you for showcasing interest in the democratic process and the economic future of this country, unfortunately, we have seen across the world that democracy itself can be quite unstable and we should cherish the freedoms that we have here.
You may recognise me as the former Chancellor, and I would like to focus my remarks here today on the chaos surrounding the last budget, although I will remain behind afterwards to answer any questions you may have.
In the previous term, Solidarity worked tirelessly to hold the government to account on a multitude of issues, a key example of this being the pressure that we placed upon the government to rescue the steelworks at Scunthorpe, and the scrutiny that we highlighted over the improper costings associated with the HS4 project.
I have consistently been a champion of fiscal responsibility within government, and has Chancellor I have worked with a multitude of parties across the political spectrum to deliver multiple budgets that have secured genuine improvements to the quality of life of the British people, so I fully recognise the pressure that the previous Chancellor was under when putting together the final pieces of their budget, however, that simply doesn’t excuse the litany of mistakes that made to the final draft.
HS4 has been talked about extensively in recent weeks, however, it is difficult to avoid talking about arguably one of the greatest examples of pork-barreling that we have seen in this country for years. Just take a basic look at the extensive network of tunnels and viaducts required to complete HS4, and even those without any prior knowledge of construction projects should be able to determine that this railway cannot be built for a mere 8 billion pounds.
It is also utterly laughable that the project decides to terminate at Truro, now, I believe that Truro is a beautiful part of the world, however, the fact that a relatively small city of under 30,000 people would be connected to HSR is a joke, especially, when you consider that the far larger settlement of Bristol misses out, a confusing omission when you consider extending the route to Bristol would provide clear cut benefits to both Wales and England.
Unfortunately, the Chancellor refused to listen to reason and fully explain how they reached their original costing plan, so if Solidarity is able to form government after the election HS4 will have to be fixed, with appropriate costings and revisions to the route to make the overall project worth the paper it is written on.
Historically, the Conservative Party have claimed that they are far better at managing the economy, and even like to suggest that they’ll make people better off with the fiscal agenda, however, a quick look at the recent time highlights a perfect example for unveiling this as an almighty lie and that is their decision to raise VAT.
You’d think that during a cost of living crisis that the government would take all required steps to reduce people's bills, however, in order to finance a tax cut for the largest and greediest multinational corporations, the Conservative Party decided to increase your weekly bills by cruelly increasing VAT.
In stark contrast, Solidarity have always been proponents of fair taxation of all communities, which is why in previous government's we have worked to reduce regressive elements of taxation and ensure that the richest individuals and corporations pay their fair share, of course, with the mess that the Conservative Party left us we have a lot to clean up in the next term!
If we are able to secure government, we will start by reversing the senseless cut to corporation tax and the cruel VAT increase, however, we will also work to close off tax loopholes still present in our taxation system, an example being wealthy individuals who loan money loan money against the unrealised gains of their investments instead of cashing out and you can guarantee that we’ll close this loophole.
The United Kingdom needs strong and effective leadership on the economy, and through our actions in government, Solidarity have proven that we can deliver an economy that benefits communities across the country by supporting public services, building modern infrastructure and ensuring that public utilities are run for the good of the people, not to enrich a small group of private investors.
In conclusion, a vote for Solidarity is a vote for a firm and prosperous economy.”
After concluding his remarks, the large penguin remained true to his works and spoke to several members of the communities on issues ranging from climate change to transport. He also posted numerous posters that look like this:
