model-willem visits the town of Aberystwyth once more to discuss the situation in the town and the way it can prosper more with some concerned citizens
Willem: “I want to start by welcoming you for coming out here today to have a conversation with me about this beautiful town that you live in. I have come to Aberystwyth in the past before to talk with you about infrastructural issues that you were experiencing and it’s great to be back here once more.”
Amelia: “We are seeing a lot of powers being handled by the Senedd instead of the Parliament in Westminster, do you believe that this should be done more than it is right now?”
Willem: “I am a big believer in the Union and can be considered a Unionist when it comes to my stance on devolution. I believe that we can do much more as a country when we do it together, for example defence, we cannot have four little armies, but should work together on this. But the same goes for cross-border issues, like with terrorism and other crimes. We shouldn’t be devolving more powers to the Senedd right now, let the Senedd deal with the powers it has right now and make sure that it uses the powers it has to the best of its abilities.”
Oliver: “Just like in other parts of the United Kingdom we are seeing a lot of immigrants heading our way as well. We want to do our part in Wales, but there’s already a lot of problems so we cannot house an unlimited number of immigrants. What are you going to do about that?”
Willem: “I want to thank you for raising this issue because it is an important one. We as Conservatives want to get a firmer grip on immigration, especially on illegal immigration and on human trafficking. We are seeing more and more people travelling to Europe and towards the UK as well, often in very dangerous circumstances. This is why we want to work with France, the European Union, and countries in North Africa to see what we can do together to stop so many people from making the trip across the Mediterranean. This also means more cross-border coordination, more action on border control, and more investment and trade with North African countries.”
Myfanwy: “As a friend of a gay person, I am always wondering what candidates are going to be doing to further protect their rights.”
Willem: “It’s important that we fight for better rights for LGBTQ people wherever they live. We have done a lot of this in the past already and we will continue to fight for their protection, this also means more cooperation with associations to see where we can help these people, through mental health clinics and shelters for people who have been kicked out by their parents or other people that they live with. We also want to extent this protection towards people in other countries and this means making sure that the people that are being convicted for being LGBT getting protection within the United Kingdom as refugees. But we also want to achieve this through aid for organisations that help LGBTQ people in countries where it is still illegal for them to live their lives.”
Arthur: “Wales has been economically a bit more independent for a while now, especially with the devolution of income taxation that has happened. So, what can the national Government actually do regarding economic and financial matters for Wales?”
Willem: “The national Government can still do a lot for Wales, especially when it comes to a Long-Term Economic Plan, something that we want to establish. As Conservatives we want to create this Plan that has as a goal that we create a more stable economy that’s focused on the future. This means that we create clear objectives and clear strategies to improve our economy and thus also the Welsh economy. We also want to stop increases in VAT and in National Insurance, which will benefit the Welsh people as well.”
Liza: “You were talking about infrastructural issues happening between Wales and England, so what will you do to improve infrastructural connectivity?”
Willem: “Infrastructural connectivity is very important to me, we must make sure that Wales gets the best it can get, this means improved infrastructural connectivity with England as well. We must ensure that we improve roads and railways in the border regions to improve economic opportunities for everyone in Wales. This will affect the people here in Aberystwyth as well as the people in Monmouthshire, or in Shropshire. We should make sure that when we invest in green alternatives when we do so, which means better railway infrastructure first and foremost.”
Richard: “We are also seeing a lot of people here in Wales out of a job reliant on welfare benefits, so what will you do to help those people back into a job?”
Willem: “We want to do a lot to help people back into a job, because we believe that people get a better life when they are working. Studies have shown that people’s self-esteem and mental health increases when they have a job, because they are among people again and they therefore can contribute to society in their own way again. We want to achieve this through weekly job coach meetings for people on Jobseekers Allowances, so that they are more likely to get a job, because of the help they are getting. We also want to see that people who are on welfare benefits have mandatory community service, so that they contribute to their community as well as for it to increase their self-worth.”
model-willem continued to have conversations with other people in Aberystwyth about the issues that they are facing.
