Chancellor Sephronar visits the City of London to give a speech on the Conservative plans for the economy.
Thanks to everyone who came here today to talk about our economy. It is essential to have constant discussions about our economy and to look at the future, mainly because the Conservatives have a different view on this than most other parties. We believe in sound finances, which is why we believe it is essential to deliver a balanced budget, which we have done in the last Government. We have delivered a budget that focuses on growth, that focuses on our public services, and that looks towards the future.
The future is important, especially when we look at the economy, that is why we want to create a Long-Term Economic Plan when we are in Government. This Plan is important to ensure sustained prosperity, stability, and resilience, especially in the rapidly changing world. Over a year ago Russia invaded Ukraine, an invasion that had incredibly big consequences on the entire world and the world economy. It has taught us that we have to look differently at how we manage our economy and how we go about our daily lives. This means that we need to look again at how our economy works and how we can make sure that it continues to work for every person in the UK.
This plan means that we will create a comprehensive framework to ensure that we are guiding economic decisions towards the bigger picture, a prosperous and stable United Kingdom. This plan means that we can guide investments and guide policies to ensure that our economy and our country grow. This plan means that the United Kingdom becomes more competitive on a world scale, making sure that the UK becomes more attractive to outside investors. All of this means that business investments are increased and that means more money for people to spend. It also means that we can look at the bigger picture regarding government investments in infrastructure, education, the NHS, and research. All of this aimed to improve our economy even further.
As I outlined before, the conflict with Russia means that our economy was hit hard, and it couldn’t deal with the shocks of the lack of gas and food that wasn’t coming from Russia or Ukraine anymore. The Long-Term Economic Plan also means that we can make sure the economy is better equipped to deal with these kinds of shocks in the future and hopefully avoid these major economic downfalls in the future.
But a Long-Term Economic Plan is not the only thing that we are proposing for the future though, we also want to put a lock on raising VAT, National Insurance, and Income Tax. We believe that people need to be able to spend their money the way they want, without being forced to give more to the government. A rise in VAT is something that hits the poorest proportionally more than it hits the wealthiest people in the UK. We must ensure that regressive taxes such as VAT aren’t increased, so we help and protect the poorer people. Having a job must be rewarded as well, which is why we do not want to increase the income taxes, we believe that people who are working must deserve to keep more of their money, since they have worked for it.
Something that is costing the British taxpayer a lot of money has been the nationalisation of the railways and bus services. The Conservatives will fight for the privatisation of these two industries, meaning that we can focus financial investments on other industries that need it hard, such as education and the NHS. We believe that by privatising the railways and bus services they can become competitive again and lower their prices through innovation and competition.
One of the important things that we also want to do is make sure that our economy is decoupled more from the Chinese economy, as we are seeing more and more dangerous views in China and destructive behaviour from them. We believe that it is important that we focus on our own manufacturing industry, making us less reliant on other countries for our goods and our services. We have banned the Chinese from our intelligence infrastructure, and we should continue this effort by decoupling our economy and seeking alternatives for Chinese goods and services, preferably within the United Kingdom.
If you vote Conservative, we will give you sound economics, a balanced budget, an economic look to the future, and more money through less taxation.
Chancellor Sephronar ends his speech with loud applause from the people listening.
