I first joined Labour in October 2019 and since then there have been no less than 9 different leaders of the Labour Party, with Lily and Youma having served in two different spells. There have been 5 different leaders in the last 12 months alone. It is clear that Labour needs stability and vision and that is what I seek to offer.
The Party has just spent a year in a very successful, very popular left-wing government which I was lucky and privileged to serve in. The last election result shows that Labour is more popular than I've ever known and that the country wants a left-wing government, not the right-wing coalition of chaos we are under now.
But for much of our time in government, Labour were seen as little more than Solidarity-lite. Sharing much of the same policies but not as radical as Solidarity. And whilst I think, to a degree, that will always be the case as long as both parties exist, we cannot simply go on being just a diet version of Solidarity. There needs to be a stark difference between the parties.
Now, I'm not talking about going back to the days of New Labour, when Labour was verging on centre-right at some points, but heading in that direction would not be a misstep in my eyes. After all, was it not New Labour that won the landslides of 97 and 2001?
We need a more considered socialism. Not the merely radicalist of socialist doctrine that Solidarity run on, but a socialism which takes into account the values of the British people. We aren't a radical people. We don't behead monarchs or stage military coups, at least not in modern history anyway. We are a proud nation, proud of our history and our identity and our culture. We are a nation of many, not few and we are a nation which always wants to be better, to be more than what we are and I truly believe that we can be that.
Labour can be the party leading the way, forming a better future for us all. A future where there is no need to sleep and beg on the streets. A future where there is no need to skip meals to feed your children. A future where there is no need to work more than one job. A future where all peoples are welcome and can find refuge in Britain.
We can be so much more.
If you follow my vision, vote for me to be leader of the Labour Party and let's make the future.
Thank you.
