In the past few years the British public have become increasingly aware of how misinformation impacts both local and international politics, from conspiracy theories surrounding the country of birth of President Obama to organised campaigns designed to delegitimize elections we know that a new battleground has formed.
It has therefore become increasingly important for our elected representatives to take efforts to prevent the intentional or unintentional spread of such fale information, especially, as such misinformation can have a chilling effect on the peoples ability to trust the democratic process and the representatives it elects.
Unfortunately, as I was perusing the news this morning an article crossed my desk which forwarded several false premises in an attempt to attack my record within government this term which I feel free to address, although as I wrote abqout the World Cup just a few days ago I will focus on the other points.
I'll start with Burkina Faso, now, I recently gave a statement to the House in which I stated the response that this government is taken to the unfortunate coup that has occurred in that country. In the said speech, I made passing reference to the fact that the present security situation in Libya had negatively impacted regional security.
It seems that such a remark resulted in people assuming that this was an attack on NATO and their intervention in Libya, however, as I said in response to these claims my remarks didn't say that intervention was a mistake but rather that the instability caused by a lack of post-war planning contributed to the situation, as I again said during the debate one of my friends is a Libyan that took part in the fight to oust Gadaffi so I have no interest in defending that regime.
Sadly, it appears as if the Shadow Foreign Secretary didn't pay attention to the remarks I gave during the debate as they've either ignored these comments or simply decided that any minor criticism of NATO's actions are an unacceptable attack on the organisation which seems like a rather harmful position to take.
Secondly, the Shadow Foreign Secretary mentions the case of Oliver Mason and the actions that I took as Foreign Secretary to ensure his swift and safe return, now, the Opposition are quite annoyed about these measures and they furiously attacked the government at the time of this incident.
I shall note, however, that in the weeks since that incident the Shadow Foreign Secretary has not outlined a single credible alternative that they would have enacted to secure the safe return of Oliver Mason, as I believe I said at the time I had exhausted every potential diplomatic option in my efforts to secure the release of Oliver Mason and I only engaged in the actions I did because they were the last credible solution to our predicament.
It isn't the first time the Conservative Party have attacked the government's foreign policy decisions without offering an alternative, as those who can remember our discussions with the Iranian government that secured the release of several British nationals will also know this decision came under heavy fire from the Official Opposition.
Just like the Oliver Mason case, the Conservative Party attacked the steps the government took to secure the release of British nationals without presenting a credible alternative strategy that would have achieved the same results and in the months following they've failed to do so.
I understand that the Shadow Foreign Secretary has a responsibility to hold this government to account, and I welcome oversight from those on the opposition benches, however, such criticism cannot be based on misinformation and credible alternatives must be proposed.
In the case of Oliver Mason (and Iran still) no credible alternative to the government''s action has been provided and in the case of Burkina Faso they've either intentionally or unintentionally spread misinformation.
Ultimately, the Conservative Party may dislike how this government has handled different matters like Russia and Burkina Faso but I hope that further Conservative opposition to such movements at least comes with an alternative.
