Today, the Scottish Government published its paper on options for Brexit, trying to reconcile the will of Scotland and the Scottish government to remain in the European Union, and the will of the British Government and the United Kingdom as a whole to leave the European Union and the Single Market. Northern Ireland is in a very similar position to that of Scotland. Northern Ireland voted to remain in the Single Market (albeit voting to leave the EU), and the Northern Irish Executive wishes to find solutions to the wishes of its members, who have differing views on Brexit, with the central aim of finding a solution in which Northern Ireland maintains an open border with the Republic of Ireland and with the UK. As such, the Northern Irish Executive endorses these plans from the Scottish Government, and would wish to see one of these solutions implemented, either in Scotland and Northern Ireland, or across the UK as a whole, to ensure a smooth and open border on the Island of Ireland.
