Union Day Bill

A Bill to recognise the date of the accession first King of England (which then included Wales), Scotland and Ireland, which would, in turn, lead to the creation of the first British state, with a public holiday.

BE IT ENACTED by the Queen's most Excellent Majesty, by and with the advice and consent of the Lords Spiritual and Temporal, and Commons, in this present Parliament assembled, and by the authority of the same, as follows:-

1: Definitions

(1) A public holiday is defined as a day established by law whereby all non-essential services will be closed to celebrate a national event.

2: Date

(1) The date for the public holiday celebrating Union Day will be on 24 March.

(2) The public holiday will be commemorated each year.

(3) The 24 March coincides with that of the accession of the first King of England, Scotland and Ireland in 1603.

3: Commencement and Extent

(1) This act will come into effect 1 February 2017.

(2) This act extends to the entire United Kingdom.
