Royal Museum Motion
This House Recognises:
- That the monarch of the United Kingdom will see much change from their coronation to the coronation of their successor.
- That there is a benefit for posterity to be gained from the establishment of a museum dedicated to the reign of the monarch, detailing the developments and historical events that occurred during their reign and the operation of their parliaments.
This House Urges
- That the government should look into the feasibility of constructing such a museum for Her Majesty the Queen.
- That similar museums should be constructed for all future monarchs who rule for at least a decade.
Foreign Ownership Restriction Bill 2016
A bill to prevent foreign ownership of firms negatively impacting the UK.
BE IT ENACTED by The Queenโs most Excellent Majesty, by and with the advice and consent of the Commons in this present Parliament assembled, in accordance with the provisions of the Parliament Acts 1911 and 1949, and by the authority of the same, as follows:โ
1: Restriction on Foreign Ownership.
1) Foreign persons may not own more than 50% of a company subject to a restricted ownership order.
2) For the purposes of this act a foreign person is any natural person that does not hold citizenship of the United Kingdom, Ireland or any Commonwealth nation or any legal person which is not registered and head quartered in the United Kingdom.
3) The Secretary of State for State for Business, Innovation and Skills can issue a restricted ownership order on any firm they consider to be economically or culturally significant to the UK.
4) Any transaction that would result in a firm subject to a restricted ownership order violating said order will only be valid insofar as it complies with the requirements of the order.
5) An order placed on a firm which is already under more than 50% foreign ownership shall not compel the selling of shares by the foreign owners but will prevent any increase of foreign ownership from the time of issue.
5A) Section 5 shall operate to prevent an increase in foreign ownership above 50% after a reduction in foreign ownership not withstanding that the level of foreign ownership may be less than at the time the order was issued.
2: Extent, Commencement, and Short Title
(a) This Act may be cited as the Foreign Ownership Restriction Act of 2016
(b) This bill will come into effect at the first financial year after passage.
(c) This bill will apply to the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland
I mentioned these before and I've just now written them up so tell me what you think. For the Foreign ownership bill, I was thinking of playing up some ideas of workplace democracy such as preventing foreign companies buying UK firms and stripping them down or otherwise exploiting them. One issue with it though is I'm not entirely sure how well it fits in with the economic policy of the party and I'm also wondering whether allowing Commonwealth citizens to get away with it is not defeating the purpose of the bill. I'm not entirely convinced myself on the benefits of the Royal Museum motion though.
