Cracking Down on Racism Within the Community
Post Body

Evening everyone,

This post tonight largely follows on from our message at the end of yesterday's ban announcement concerning the events of the last few weeks across the globe. For those of you who have not seen this post on /r/mhocmeta it can be found here.

First of all we’d like to inform the community that, as part of showing our support for racial equality, we have added our voices to those demanding changes from Reddit to curtail the spread of hatred and bigotry that it has allowed to fester on it’s platform. As some of you may have already seen, an open letter to the CEO of Reddit and its board of directors was posted on the /r/AgainstHateSubreddits this week which can be found here. We have now gladly signed this letter and would urge Reddit to take swift and decisive action to tackle racism and white supremacy on this site.

This is of course only one, rather small, step that we can take to support the black community, and people of colour more generally, in the fight against inequality. As we hope was demonstrated by the bans yesterday, moving forward we will be cracking down hard on any racism that we see within the community. While it has of course always been against the rules, we have at times struggled with trying to balance punishment versus allowing debate within a community that is fundamentally political, and have allowed some to push the line of what is and isn't acceptable too often with too few repercussions as a result. However, given ongoing events it is clear that we have not done enough, and so will be taking a much firmer stance, cracking down on those who seek to push the line earlier, and delivering harsher punishments sooner.

Quite simply enough is enough, and while this may be a political community some views, political or otherwise, aren’t welcome here. If you cannot engage in political discussion without being a bigot, you are not welcome here. We will continue to not tolerate racism of any kind within this community.

We’d like to end this post by asking anyone in the community who has a suggestion as to how we can improve on this issue, whether it be large or small, to please feel free to message any member of the Quadrumvirate, or the Guardians /u/Timanfya and /u/Joker8765, at any point in time with your suggestions. We are listening and no step in the right direction can be too small to take.

Remember everyone that Black Lives Matter.

Regards,

The Quadrumvirate & Guardians
