Opening Speech:
Mr Speaker;
I wish to bring forward this bill which will abolish the Supreme Court; something that should have been done a long time ago.
There is an awful lot of benefits to having a final appellate court; to clarify cases of public interest or to challenge an interpretation of law which is currently on the statute book. The justices who work on the panel have fantastic legal minds and have acted with utmost professionalism since its inception- something that a few members in this House can learn from.
The reality is however; it is nothing more than a retirement home for our fantastic legal minds. This can be shown with how little work has been down; and the time taken for rulings on each case. For example; the recent case questioning whether the Representation of the People Bill was a breach of human rights or not, we had to wait until the end of the Parliament and for the Government to be kicked out and replaced before a ruling can take place. What was the point of that? You set the Government a strict deadline; yet they couldn’t have the courtesy to resolve the case before dissolution. The bill was going to be voted down anyhow now that the Tories lost their majority and I was proven right by the recent division that took place. Same for the tax case brought about by a fellow member of my party; only that the Court hasn’t even acknowledged his case yet!
The systems of this court is clearly not working. It is not working for the people of this country twofold- firstly; we are not receiving the answers to our biggest constitutional and legal questions. Secondly; when we do receive the answers, it takes far too long; especially considering that the CEO of the Supreme Court earns £145,000 a year of taxpayers money for doing a rubbish job whilst our public sector workers who do a far better job are struggling to make ends meet at the end of the month. In regards to what replaces it; I have left a considerable opportunity for members of the House to amend this bill with their ideas.
I say to the Supreme Court - get your systems together or we will get rid of you.
