Dietary Labelling Bill 2016

A bill to require labelling for major dietary groups on food and drink products.

BE IT ENACTED by The Queen's most Excellent Majesty, by and with the advice and consent of the Commons in this present Parliament assembled, in accordance with the provisions of the Parliament Acts 1911 and 1949, and by the authority of the same, as follows:-

1. Definitions

a) “Vegetarian” is defined as something made without the aid of product derived from animals that have died, been voluntarily slaughtered, or animals that die as a result of being eaten, not including products of living animals including insects, whether or not in the final food (e.g. milk, eggs, honey, bee pollen, waxes, whey).

b) “Vegan” is defined as something made without the aid of animals or animal products, including products from living animals.

c) “Halal” is defined as something made only with or with the aid of meat prepared according to Muslim law.

d) “Kosher” is defined as something made only with or with the aid of food or drink according to Jewish law.

2. Labelling

a) Every food and drink item or package sold within the United Kingdom shall have the following markings:

b) Whether it is suitable for vegans.

c) Whether it is suitable for vegetarians.

d) Whether it is suitable for a halal diet.

e) Whether it is suitable for a kosher diet.

f) Claiming a product is halal, kosher, vegetarian or vegan without it meeting the definitions of this bill shall be illegal.

3. Labelling details

a) The markings outlined in section 2 shall be at least 0,5 cm high uppercase text in Arial written on a white background, or with a white bordering around the text, which shall be in black

b) reading “VEGETARIAN” for products suitable for vegetarian diets or “NON-VEGETARIAN” for products not suitable for vegetarian diets.

c) reading “VEGAN” for products suitable for vegan or vegetarian diets.

d) reading “HALAL” for products suitable for halal diets or reading “NON-HALAL” for products not suitable for halal diets.

e) reading “KOSHER” for products suitable for kosher diets.

4. Commencement & Short Title

a) This Act extends to the whole of the United Kingdom.

b) This Act may be cited as the Dietary Labelling Act 2016.

c) This Act will come into effect 12 month after passing.
