Veteran Bill

A bill to improve the treatment of veterans.

BE IT ENACTED by The Queen's most Excellent Majesty, by and with the advice and consent of the Commons in this present Parliament assembled, in accordance with the provisions of the Parliament Acts 1911 and 1949, and by the authority of the same, as follows:

Section 1: Definitions

a) For the purposes of this bill, these terms will have the following definitions:

i) ‘Veteran’ means any person who has served in the British Armed Forces for a total of 15 years, or have partaken in four tours, and has been honourably discharged.

ii) ‘National Defence Medal’ means a medal provided by Her Majesty the Queen to be given to all veterans, with the post-nominal 'NDM'.

Section 2: Future Jobs for Veterans

a) A veteran will have priority for the following jobs:

i) Prison guard

ii) Police officer

iii) Border officer

Section 3: Exceptions to Section 2

a) A veteran will not be eligible to be prioritised for a job listed in Section 2 if they don't pass a test by a psychologist to ensure they don’t have PTSD or any mental disorder or illness that effects their ability to successfully partake in their future job.

Section 4: Future Housing for Veterans

a) A veteran will have priority for social housing.

Section 5: National Defence Medal

a) A veteran will be eligible for a National Defence Medal and will be provided to them after their service.

Section 6: Veterans Department

a) The Veterans Department shall be created.

b) The Veterans Department duty shall be to look after the interests and needs of ex-service men and women.

c) The Veterans Department shall be lead by the newly created Minister of State for Veterans, under the department of Defence.

Section 7: Commencement, Short Title and Extent

a) This bill will come into effect immediately.

b) This bill may be cited as the Veteran Act 2016.

c) This bill shall apply to the whole of the United Kingdom.
