This House Recognises:
Supporters of the former President of Brazil, Jair Bolsonaro, attempted to storm the Brazilian Congress.
They did this in order to depose the sitting president, Luiz Inácio Lula Da Silva, who was elected last year and inaugurated days before the Riots.
There have been calls to extradite Mr. Bolsonaro from Florida, where he has fled to, to Brazil to face charges.
Bolsonaro’s re-election campaign was rife with claims of voter fraud should he lose.
This House Therefore Urges That:
The Government place sanctions on Mr. Bolsonaro;
A statement be given by the Foreign Secretary on the events that transpired;
The Government re-affirm its support for President Da Silva.
This Motion was written by The Rt Hon u/realbassist, Secretary of State for Education, on behalf of the Social Liberal Party.
Opening speech:
Speaker,
The events we saw during the Riots in Brazil were reminiscent of another somewhat recent attack on democracy, the Capitol Riots in America. Let’s be clear, in both cases we had leaders who would not concede, and their supporters attempted to coup and force the elections to be overturned. Thankfully, in both cases these attempts were thwarted, and the President is safe.
It is nearly inconceivable that in two of the largest democracies in the world, elections have been threatened in recent years. In Brazil, we have seen supporters of the former president stop ambulances during the COVID Pandemic, a disease the former President tried to downplay the danger of constantly. In the UK, it is our duty to stand firmly against such leaders, that seek personal power and glory over the protection of their people.
It is, therefore, the moral imperative of this House to roundly condemn the illegal actions taken by the supporters of the Former President, actions spurred by the former president himself. Brazil is one of the largest democracies in the world, with over 100 Million registered voters, and they find themselves in a position we saw not two years ago. President Trump may have yet to face the music, but President Bolsonaro will be remembered as the President who rejected democracy.
