3DS cross play or no cross play?

I just acquired MHXX on the 3ds and am looking at the English patches for the game. I am wondering if I will have better luck with online play if I get the English cross play patch or no cross play patch.

Crossplay will let me play with people who have GU on the switch while no crossplay would be playing on the Japanese servers.

I would like to get the crossplay patch but I am not sure how active GU is on switch especially in low rank.
