Help with flying machines for farming (Windows 10)

I am trying to make a bamboo farm and I can not figure out how to make the flying machine (arm that breaks the bamboo to be collected). I have tried watching several videos and followed multiple different set ups, but nothing is working. Some of them will fire 2-3 times then stop, while others dance back and forth weirdly and never make it anywhere. Am I missing something? I am on Windows 10 version 1.11.1.
