UPDATE: My ADA accommodation got approved!!
I have MCAS and have a very serious sensitivity to scents/perfume. It causes migraines, chest tightening/burning, and other respiratory issues. It can take days for these symptoms to clear up from an exposure.
I work in a smaller dental office and have an issue that the person who sits next to me all day will wear perfume or a perfume lotion. This person is aware of my condition and what it does to me. They will be good about not wearing it for a while and then either forget or not care and wear it, causing a reaction. This causes me to get sick and have to leave.
It’s a chronic cycle of this person wearing it, me getting sick and mentioning it, them stopping for a little bit, rinse/repeat. There are no consequences for them so it just keeps happening. This has been a year now as they have worked their that long.
Has anyone done an official ADA request for no perfume or scents for employees in the office? I feel like this is a reasonable request since I’m not asking for a fragrance free office; I know we can’t control what patients wear, etc. what documents did you need and were you successful?
