Controller Setup Help?

Using a PS4 controller. MAME recognizes it in the config menu, but when I use it to play Ninja Turtles, "Insert Coin" is still assigned to 5 on my keyboard and "Start" somehow got assigned to X on the controller. What did I do wrong? And is there some way of finding what each "Button 1/2/etc" does for each game without having to boot them and go through every keyboard combination?
