Changing “tab” key

I have a modded arcade1up running retro pie..on my cab there is four usb encoders for inputs..obviously I wanna play four player games on it..so I hit “tab” get the dip switches..set the switches to four players..my issue is I would like to change the “tab” key in inputs to another button so that I don’t have to leave a keyboard plugged into my cabinet..mame won’t let me reassign the “tab” key to a button on the usb encoder
