Disclaimer: I don't really use ride-sharing on a day-to-day basis, so I might have just been naive. Still, what the heck.
DMV area: I request a ride to get back home after a concert about 15 miles away. Initial quote for the ride is $39.
The rider gets there, I hop on and he starts driving with his phone in his hand, checking directions. Weird - I think - because he already has the same directions from the Lyft driver app popping up on his car screen.
After a couple minutes and less than a mile in, while we're already on the highway, he ends up the ride by mistake. He then asks me to request the ride again so that he can take me to my destination. at this point I have been charged for the first partial part of the ride, $9.58.
At that point I try to hurry up because I'm not familiar with the area and there are turns he might have to take and I have to request a ride from the middle of the highway. The quote to get me home now is $72.99. I don't really know what to do, I need to hurry up, so I request the ride. At this point the driver doesn't look at his phone anymore for directions, he only looks at his car screen.
When we get to the destination, the driver apologizes again for canceling the ride. I mention the fact that I ended up paying double the original price, he mutters something and I just tell him I'll try to figure it out with the Lyft customer support and just get out of the car.
Trying to talk with someone at Lyft is complicated, so I end up submitting a ticket for "driver using phone while driving" in order to chat with someone. They tell me I was not overcharged and that the amount I paid for two rides instead of one is absolutely right because the first ride ended and I requested a second one agreeing on the quote. No refunds for me.
The end :') Was this an honest mistake or was this just a scam naive girls like me fall for?
EDIT two days later: Pinging Lyft on Twitter seemed to be the way to go. I was able to explain the situation (ride being ended in the middle of the highway while the driver was still driving, and having to request a new ride on the fly) and they passed the issue to their Safety Team, telling me I should be eligible to get this reimbursed. Thanks to the people suggesting me that, and to the ones who suggested me the right wording to use.
EDIT 2: Lyft CLOWNISHLY refunded me for the first ride ($9.58), but refused to refund me for the second ride ($72.99) claiming that refunding the second ride would mean to profit on a safety issue -.-
