Binding on Acoustic

Hey guys,
I purchased a vintage acoustic guitar (1950’s) on eBay, I haven’t even received it yet. One of the known issues in the photos and from the seller is the binding is mostly bad. I’d like to try and replace it myself. When ordering the binding, how do you measure it to get the precise size? And if you cannot find an identical size, can it be trimmed?
Also, any tips or advice for a project like this is appreciated.
