I've been trying to lucid dream for over a decade, but I can never make it past body paralysis when breathing gets slow/heavy.

I've gotten very good at getting into that initial sleep paralysis phase quite quickly and easily. However, I can never get over the sensation of having difficulty breathing, and at best I just consciously linger while some part of my brain refuses to fall asleep.

Any tips on how to overcome this phase?

Not sure if relevant, but I dream readily, even within quick naps. Not sure I can call these "dreams" without REM, but I have a very active mind, and I can realize how quickly and creatively my mind goes places even after snoozing for 20 minutes.
