I did all the steps- what can I do differently?

Woke up on accident today and as I fell back asleep, noticed my body get all paralyzed and stuff and I was thinking ok lucid dream time, perfect! And it worked! At at first....

I "woke up" and my hands looked all funny and I was in my room, and I went through the whole grounding process, said tomyself I am dreaming, felt things, pet my dog etc. I was certain it was a lucid dream and I felt very aware. I wanted to see my friend so I walked through the door and told myself that she'd be in my room when I went back in. So I tried that and it... didn't work? I went to sit down and my dream got all weird, My dog was weird and it changed and I completely forgot I was dreaming, and the dream turned into something else.

I'm not sure how I can do this differently? It happens every time, i try to do something but I'm not completely in control and then I forget I'm dreaming.

Any advice is appreciated, I feel like I've tried everything at this point.
