Become a elections poll worker

We all read the same news and know that COVID is more dangerous for people 60 . And, if you’ve voted in Lubbock, you know that’s also who staffs election polling locations. So, if you want to protect our democracy and help keep polling locations open, apply to be an election worker.

There isn’t anything on the votelubbock.org page on how to become an elections worker, but I talked to the Elections Administrator, Dorothy Kennedy today. Here are some basic steps:

  1. Fill out an application with a staffing agency and tell them you want to be an elections worker. She told me Express, but she said there were two others options (she didn’t name them).

  2. Sign up for training which will be at the end of September. You can call the elections office at (806) 775-1339. You get paid $9/hr for training and all the options she told me were weekdays from 2pm-8pm.

  3. Work on Election Day (Tuesday, November 3rd) from approx. 5:45am-last person in line is finished voting; polls are open 7am-7pm. You get paid $11/hr.

So, if you need the work or just want to make sure other people can vote, go sign up. She said they do need more people. If you are 18 , you need to be registered to vote in Lubbock County. 16 & 17 year olds can also work but need parent and school permission.

Other fun voting info: Last day to register to vote is October 5. Early voting in person is October 13-30. If you are voting by mail, your unofficial deadline to mail back is October 20th; the official deadline to receive it is November 3rd (give your mail extra time right now). And, Election Day is November 3.
