Mugsy and Cappy s3e9
Post Body

I watched this episode this morning while I was getting ready for work and it was a big mistake, but ultimately, im glad I did. I had an alcoholic father who unfortunately passed away due to complications from his addiction a little over a year ago. I have went though situations exactly like what Cappy and Mugsy went through. I was Cappy, my dad was Mugsy. Time and time again. Our relationship was complicated and due to circumstances out of my control and a little bit of my own stubbornness (I got it from my dad), I was unable to say my goodbyes to him.

I have never ever in my life watched a piece of media that represented that complicated relationship with my father and situations that his addiction would put me through. I seriously was struggling to keep it together all day. Finally, nine hours later after work and gym, I got home and let it out. I watched the next episode where the group begs him to stay and it killed me too, but it sort of helped me understand more about my father and some of what me maybe went through with his addiction and depression.

To any of the commenters saying it was weird that Cappy invited her dad to the work function - yes, it was weird and maybe shouldn’t have happened. But it wasn’t about that. The point was that Cappy wanted to show her father how far she had some and show him off as well. No, he maybe shouldn’t have been there. But imagine just wanting your parent to be present at an important and proud moment of your life and then it all going to shit due to alcoholism and mental health issues. My dad was similar in the way that if I was ever alone with him, he would get blackout drunk. In the last couple days I saw my dad alive, I had to pick him off the floor like Cappy did Mugsy.

Anyways, I’m glad I watched this show and I’m sad it’s over, but that episode hit me like a train. I miss my dad so much, and I don’t know if I have much regret because I tried to protect myself just like Cappy, but I have a lot of guilt. My dad was never one to open up about his alcoholism, but I’d like to think that if he got better maybe he would’ve liked this show or related to it. I know he probably would’ve related to Loudermilks snobby music taste because he was the same way and I am too because of him. I’ve never seen anything like those scenes. It’s sad, but that’s the way it is. Hopefully a small part of my story will clear up a bit of people who were kind of confused about why Mugsy was there in the first place. Stuff like what happened to him happens in real life, and it hurts people. My dad was just like Mugsy - a very nice and greàt person until he picked up a drink (but he was a lot smarter hahaha).

I'm a 34 year old woman with an alcoholic father. As far as I know he is still alive, but I've not spoken to him in over 10 months after 20 years of a roller coaster relationship with him. It just got to the point where I couldn't handle any more of his bad decisions.

That episode definitely brought up a lot of emotions to the surface! I'm sorry you know the feeling too.
