About to start a campaign and not super familiar with Forgotten Realms.

I’ve been playing for a long time, and always a homebrew. Decided to take a break from the creation aspect and run LMoP.
My characters have started talking about backgrounds. They want to all come from a village that was sacked. Some sold into slavery, some other directions.
My question is, on the Sword Coast, what sort of faction would sack a village for slaves?
I know Luskan condones slavery, so I figure that would be where they could all meet up again by chance.
