Total n00b. Please bare with me. Card question

I'm sure they now that I've gotten some of these cards I will begin researching and delving into specifics on the cards but I do have a simple question that I've seen on a couple of cards in the box I'm currently opening. In 2 packs now, right before the foil card has been a standard looking card except that the character seems to be embossed or raised or something similar. Nothing shiny or fancy outside of this. Can anyone tell me what parallel etc these would be?
