Lockdowns in the past
Post Body
This is a topic which has been touched on in the past and that is modern technology has enabled lockdowns. If lockdowns had occurred in the past do you think there would be far more opposition to lockdowns without current technology. Lets say lockdown was implemented say 25 or more years ago. The following would be issues
- If so called non essential shops would have closed and only supermarkets and a small number of other types of shops were allowed to open, this would create two problems if you wanted to buy things. Firstly, The supermarkets had not gone heavily into non food items such as clothes, electrical items etc. Secondly, without the internet a convenient method of buying things would not be available if shops were closed. Mail order was nowhere near as easy to buy things as the internet and I assume far less goods were sold under mail order than currently available on the internet.
- If shops were forced to close, they wouldn't have the option of using the internet as an alternative to in store sales.
- If people couldn't meet or were restricted who they could meet outside their household, zoom and skype would not be available to communicate and telephone was the available means to communicate. Would this make not being able to see family and friends outside your household less tolerable.
- The technology didn't exist to enable working from home.
