The royal family of Avaloria have been running their kingdom for generations upon generations. The kingdom has mainly stayed in power through smart political alliances through marriages of nearby powers. Due to needing to keep royal family unwed to keep potential for alliances the kingdom set up a tradition for when a prince or princess comes of age they can choose someone to have as a concubine. They may choose any unwed woman in the kingdom to become his concubine and they cannot refuse.
The King passed away recently leaving the eldest prince Thorin to become king. While he is currently unwed the previous queen remains in power ruling alongside him as an advisor.
The day finally came for the youngest prince Alaric to choose his concubine. When he goes in front of the King and Queen to choose his condubine, he chooses the Queen. Since she is unwed she is stripped of all of her power to just become a concubine to her son.
