Dungeons and Dragons would have been fine. There've been a litany of shows - Stranger Things, Buffy the Vampire Slayer - and popular creators - Critical Role - who have turned that game from a niche amongst nerds to something that can be enjoyed by a great variety of consumers.
Hell, even Warhammer would have been better. Sure, the cost would have been high, but you were already paying out the nose. And your college, at least, had a club dedicated to it, with even a couple of stereotypically "popular" students playing it. There were a couple of classes that dedicated a unit to the game, and most people would understand what you meant when you said you played it.
Of course you had no such fucking luck.
Your dad (God bless him) had bestowed upon you his lifelong obsession with miniature wargames, painstakingly crafted and painted miniatures of historical soldiers, from Egypt to the Korean War, and the requisite battlefields to go along with it.
Of course, this left you isolated at a school that was known for two things - partying and its difficult classes. One where another wargamer was not to be seen, and the few people who were aware of your hobby had opted for ridicule over simply trying it out.
Enter Sophia - her family was wealthy as God, something about pre-colonial Spain, she was smart enough to enter the university, and win its top academic prize freshman year.
Oh, and yeah, she was hot as sin - long blonde hair, blue eyes, perfectly toned stomach, and large breasts, but not enough to make her seem fat in the slightest. In another word - every nerd's wet dream.
Your wet dream.
You were pretty sure divulging the contents of all your fantasies involving her would land you an instant expulsion, so she remained just that, a far off non-prospect.
Moving back to wargaming, you spotted someone moving a pretty big box of miniatures on campus, out of which fell a smaller box - a particularly obscure set of Thirty Years' War figures, based on your quick look, from some irrelevant duchy - pricey, but not overly powerful.
You just put it in your bag and kept going.
You thought you saw someone look back, or shut, but the wind was howling and you were heading home.
Later that night, at around ten, you get a buzz for your apartment. After you let them up - a shock - Sophie is at your door!
"Hey," she whispers, glancing, embarrassed, over the top of her sunglasses, "I think you picked up one of my miniature armies by mistake."
She glances around.
"Think I can have it back?"
She has no power here - and you have it all.
This is your chance...
Don't blow it!
