Why is Lil Nas X considered a 'gay icon'?

Hi, I am new to Lil Nas X and therefore don't know a whole lot about him but I was wondering why is he considered a "gay icon" apart from featuring gay themes in his songs and video clips?
No hate please. I just want to learn more about him and absolutely love that people see his as a gay icon.
