The method I've found works best for me and others around me is as follows
Dont set calender or phone reminders, but you have one rule. If you remember to do it, and you can, you must. If you don't remember, don't hold it against yourself. Only do it when you remember it.
It will start to happen slowly because you've made that deal with yourself. Then, you're remembering it more and more, and it becomes less burdensome to do it. After a while, you become uncomfortable when you DON'T do it.
It eases you into it. Starting off with routines on something you can't stand doing sucks ass. Rather than forcing yourself to do it, this brings you into the mindset of wanting to do it.
