Restaurantware is very resilient -- it resists chips and breakage to an incredible extent. There are a lot of great vintage patterns (see, e.g., Syracuse, Iroquois or Buffalo china). There's a lot of this stuff about, sold at antique shops or on eBay, Etsy or similar. If you don't have to pay the shipping (sturdy = heavy), you'll find you can own a terrific dinnerware set with far more diverse options (cereal, fruit and sauce bowls, platters of various sizes, bouillon cups, etc) than you will find in the plastic or stoneware options available at Walmart, Target or other low-cost outlets, with a far better quality. Plus everyone in your life will always have something to put on their "watch for this" list as potential gifts for you -- the odd pieces like creamers (which are great for sauces or syrups), serving platters, little relish plates, etc.
