We always had trouble listening to dialogues in movies. Had to increase the volume to hear them, and when the explosions or loud sound effects goes off, it would tear our eardrums off as we race to the remote. Yesterday I found a short on yotube and they advised to turn the surround sound off. I did and viola! it was day and night. I checked with three random movies on three platforms (netflix, prime, and disney) and I could hear the dialogues and the explosions didn't make me jump off my couch. Everything was balanced.
People like me tend to switch on the surround sound when they get the TV thinking that they will get the theatre like experience. Can't get that if you don't have a 5.1 or 8.1 type of audio systems. If you just have your TV as a speaker, better to switch that off. Many TVs nowadays are smarter and change that for you depending on the movies, but most like me can't afford those.
Hope this helped.
Or just use CC like the rest of us old people
