I live in the Washington DC area and I drive the same route to work every day. As I do, I listen to Pandora streaming on my iPad that sits next to me. As I past through housing and business communities, the iPad happily announces wifi networks that it discovers. It shows me these networks on a popup. I usually ignore them. Most have names that we are all familiar with; someone's last name, a funny title, or the cryptic code that is built into the wifi box.
But the other day a different network popped up. As I past an industrial area, my iPad told me it had discovered a network called CIA-DRONE. That caught my attention. I laughed for a moment and then continued on to work. That night I had the iPad next to me and I made sure it was scanning for networks as I passed through the same area. No network. I did this 3 or 4 times over the next couple of days. Nothing. So I assumed I was driving too fast for the iPad to lock on and so the next day I actually stopped in the area to let the iPad discover the network. Nothing.
So, I must assume few things; 1) someone was having a fun time with people although that seems unlikely since it disappeared immediately, 2) the CIA is actually flying drones in the US and 3) if the CIA IS flying drones are they really so stupid to name their network CIA-DRONE?
You really have to wonder.
